Ashutosh in his tweets said, arrest should not have been made …now he says that dalit’s sensibilities shouldn’t be hurted….its a different issue…where does he actually stand..??

And if we talk about sensibilities..than i think Ms Somi Das’ sensibilities, as a woman, have also been hurted because no women is allowed at the top of the hierarchy (no matter whether we have 3 woman chief ministers of 3 big metros and two major parties are ruled by woman who can change power equations at will….also we had a woman president who spent all her tenure in roaming all around the world with her family……but if a woman achieves something in her life it was because of her sheer hard work….but if she is not there…it is this “sexist men” who is to blame….and to prove their point it is even fair to compare Ms Renuka Choudhary with Mr MS Ahluwalia, the man who drafted the economic budget of 1991)….and it shall hurt in the pathetic way possible…because I being a man is criticising her now…..but does that mean she should go and file a case against me..???

In India, freedom of speech comes with two clauses….one was discussed above…..and the other unwritten clause is…”Jiski Lathi, Uski Bhains”….(If Ashutosh can understand)..!!!

Ashutosh’s arguments make me happy. If he is ‘the’ successful product coming out of JNU and Commie factory; the day is not far when the factory will be closed.
    Can’t wait :D

      :D :D :D

Anand’s argument can be easily countered, for one absolute freedom implies no laws against hate speech, which is hardly desirable in a country like India. We need to understand that the mass medium of expression in the country are controlled bythe upper castes, and if there was no threat of the law, the kind of hidden casteism that we saw in the ‘Youth for Equality’ type movement would become even more evident. Secondly, as Madhu said the ‘c’ word from mayawati’s mouth is empowering, the same coming from Brameshwar Singh of the ranvir sena would have an entirely different impact. As far as ambeadkars constitution being perfect, it hardly was, the constitution was amended several times for progressive measures such as removal of zaminadari etc which had no place in the original document. So lets not make an apostle out of a brilliant man; not everything he imagined was right.

I just don’t have an idea what ‘India’ is Ashutosh referring to… I stay in America… have stayed in India.. my father worked in the govt. hospital in remote village and we lived in hospital campus for about 12 years… my nanny was a muslim woman (which I only found out after I was of age 17, when one day I casually asked her name), many workers in my father’s hospitals were dalits and SC’s and my father invited them home occasionally… we all were like a close family… and I am a Brahmin… I have no such experience as long as I can remember of my father or mother telling me not to befriend because of caste issue… And I have more than many Brahmin friends whose parents have been the same… I guess Ashutosh was born in the century before… He must go back to the places again and find out if such inequality still exists… and if it does, the people need to be educated, because that is the only way to salvation.. It’s just a lack of knowledge and all they need to be supplemented with is, knowledge… These 10% of the people, who can make a difference in the world will do a better job educating the other 90% rather than shouting, debating and creating a scene… because only person who benefits from this is ‘a politician’… and the rest gets degenerated every passing day.

And am sorry to say but Ashutosh has mucked up the debate..

  • Paddy

Did Ashutosh say that Narendra Modi refusing to give him an interview is a “suppression of speech” around 31.42? Dear Madhu, was only this joker available from the main stream media for your discussion?

    • Paddy

Not sure how Madhu, Sanjoy and Anand were able to keep a straight face whenever Ashutosh spoke.

    • Peter Haddad

Ashutosh, please give me your ph no, I am begging you .. and dare not to suppress my freedom of speech : LOL :)

  • Ritwik

Ashutosh’s comments are deplorable. What he says is at best foolish, as if he is at a school debate competition, using words like “historicity” completely out of context..he doesnot know what it means, but JNU has taught him that the word has to be used.. he doesnt understand nuance, not does he try to, uses instances from history in completely alien context.. ridiculous. why did jlf at all invite Ashutosh? He is the person singularly responsible for the ordeal that India has subject Nandy to. He needs to think before commmenting, clealry he is not quick thinker… thus he needs to think a bit more and a bit more carefully..

    • priyanka

      cant agree more

  • irlmaks

I am really appalled by the fact that a news editor of such a big news organisation has actually views of such about freedom of speech. You guys should do more shows with the editors of Hindu

  • Chandra

Media, as Ashutosh accepted, has deliberately, incessantly inflicted wounds on Hindus.

  • PBS

Aashutosh was there because it all revolved around Ashish Nandi remarks. I’m not saying that Ashutosh is right or wrong with his assertion of the society, because in certain pockets of India inequality still exists, that’s the fact of the life.

The only problem I have is, We really need to stop handling ‘sensitive’ issues with kid gloves. I totally agree with Madhu where she says India has become country of hurt sentiments. I think someone needs to make a clear point that only thing prevails is freedom of speech, if you have an issue with someone making comment about something which you don’t like, go home and cry in a pillow.

  • Peter Haddad

I am requesting Ashutosh to give his ph no so that I can ask as how many times has he got to interview Sonia Gandhi/Rahul Gandhi or Dr M M Singh. Is he not ” suppressing my freedom expression”

  • Media Radar

Meaningless interview and even more stupid comments. Either accept Nandy’s viewpoint as a relative expert who studies the subject, or laugh and keep living with your own opinions. The craziness is that everyone wants to comment on whether he is right or wrong without furnishing any facts – just based on your morals or sentiments. This is another example of indians being prone to stupidity and hysterical responses.

what the crap is ashutosh throwing?? even if someone disagrees it should be with reason! he took the debate to a lower level. Please maintain quality atleast over here.

Ashutosh you complaining about freedom of speech because Narendra Modi never gave you interview. Tell me how many times Rahul Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi and MMS has given you interview. The freely you can abuse Modi in your studio can you please tell you whether you can do same with Gandhi family. I hope you got your answer about freedom of speech..

  • neeraj

although we can find many faults with ashutosh atleast he has the guts to come to newslaundry , mr sardesi and arnab do not even want to be questioned it seems .i think ashutosh needs a refresh button so that he what has changed in india and his version of india is fading and he aknowledge that ,his rigid views makes him crazy to us

  • http://twitter.com/coat32 अभिषेक मित्तल

why do idiots like ashutosh appear on alternative media like newslaundry. madhu is slowly becoming part of that dirty laundry bag common to us….hope common sense prevails.

  • Sanjay

All the people here except Ashutosh are elitist, casteist and hypocrites and the best thing about elitists, casteists and hypocrites are that they never, never, never realise that they are elitists, casteists and hypocrites no matter how much tonnage of pure logic is presented before them. Eventually, they pass their filthy legacy of elitism, casteism and hypo-criticism to their progeny and make the world a worse place to live for others.

    • blah blah

And you are a JNU crap type of person. If I get upset at somebody or anybody would I keep on pushing for cases against them?

  • aldol

Its interesting to hear that “Hindu” has become a “Gali” in India. A country with majority population constantly under fire.
Humurous and worrying. Seems like pressure is building up.

Comment Policy: We encourage discussion and debate in our comments, among viewers and writers. However comments that are abusive or personal in nature and allegations which cannot be proven factually will be deleted.
now what about freedom of speech??

  • Mithun Singh Ahirwar

    Ashutosh is right.
    just consider an example
I say to all of you that the mothers of all you people are prostitutes and mine is not.
    now is that acceptable??
In the same way how can one say that reserved categories are corrupt(that means uppercastes are not)

  • sima

Perhaps we can move away from a simplistic definition of freedom – one based on choice. Perhaps it is to be free from one’s own ambition, conceit, fear, conflict and narrowness. In reality all voices don’t carry equal weight. Those of us who hold our ideas dear and fight to protect our “fundamental rights” – could we, may be, give up our narrow identity and carry in our voice expressions of the collective? Is this what Ashutosh was trying to say?

  • Tanmay Singal

These are the kind of things I’d like to see you do more of.

  • Vinita Singh

Dear Madhu,Anand Ranganathan was really talking sense however mr pro dalit and anti hindu was talking more about all over and not about the topic. Its shame that a country like us,which is hindu country,is shame of our religion and we call as gali. its shame and I am hurt.RSS and Modi thought is different then mr Pro dalit.I work with dalit people and I am proud to be dalit and say the the same.If ashuotosh is telling his village is behaving like this then I can say my place is behaving in different way.
One important point I want to draw by psychological research that by talking that ST ,SC is bad word then actually you are stopping them to grow and come out of the past baggage. And you can grow by accepting the situation and facts of your life as in Buddhist philosophy says.I will love to say that I don’t want to see extremist view and people can do homework before coming to discussion. And I am working in Europe, with all europien,African,USA people is social psychological research field and I can say with full knowledge that there is huge difference in the society and they are not equality in many ways. Please dont give extreme example to put ur point like ur view.Stand for what you are and don’t hide your identity like a shame.Good discussion.

Freedom is dear to all. Expression being an integral part of human existence should never be subjected to any fetters in a civilized society. Thanks to the prescience of our Constitution makers it was offered to us on a platter. However, abuse of freedom certainly warrants punitive action as it is main enemy for exercising freedom. Ashutosh appears to have only cosmetic understanding of equality. He is only mouthing platitude and wants to portray himself as a messiah of a certain cause.
Constitution of India talks of Equality in terms of status and opportunity, Liberty and Fraternity. What we, the Government, Media and nation as a whole, save few exceptions, have failed to understand is that undue emphasis on Equality and Liberty has mauled the cause of promoting Fraternity. This approach festers the social malady rather than curing it. Equality and Liberty are largely incidental to promoting Fraternity. Mother Nature does not read Article 14 of our Constitution before creating us.
