Abhinandan : Namashkar Thakur Chandan Kumar Singh ji. You are a lawyer, correct?

Chandan Singh : Yes, tell me.

Abhinandan : You have filed a case against Sri Ram, correct?

Chandan Singh : Yes

Abhinandan: Where?

Chandan Singh: In Sitamarhi

Abhinandan: Ah, Sitamarhi. So you’re from Sitamarhi?

Chandan Singh: Yes, I’m from Majorhanj, Dumri Kalan gram

Abhinandan: Is Sitamarhi named after Sita mata?

Chandan Singh: Yes. Yes. Yes.

Abhinandan: So that explains your fondness for Sita, I mean since you are from a place with her name.

Chandan Singh: Because Sitaji is Mithila’s daughter and because of good luck I was born on the same land too.

Abhinandan:  Oh yes. Was she King Mithila’s daughter?

Chandan Singh: Yes.

Abhinandan:  So you have filed a case against Shri Ram because he ill-treated his wife, correct?

Chandan Singh: Yes..Correct

Abhinandan: I wanted to ask you a few questions regarding that, but, first is your name Thakur?

Chandan Singh : Thakur Chandan Kumar Singh

Abhinandan: So you mean your first name is Thakur?

Chandan Singh : Yes, Thakur becomes the first name

Abhinandan: So you mean your first name is Thakur or is it a title?

Chandan Singh: It is a title. Chandan is my first name. Thakur Chandan Kumar Singh

Abhinandan : Thakur, as in it is a caste identity?

Chandan Singh: Kshathriye…Kshathriye Rajput!!

Abhinandan: So, in your region, everyone does this? (affix a title)  For example Brahmin Manish Pandey, Thakur Chandan Kumar, Baniya Gourab Agarwal…is it like that? Does everyone have a title?

Chandan Singh: Yes yes.

Abhinandan: Okay okay. So tell us, how should the court sentence Shri Ram?

Chandan Singh: I haven’t filed the case to seek punishment for Shri Ram, I have filed the case so that Sita Maa gets justice.

Abhinandan: So will there be a provision for alimony…Some monetary compensation? The court also asked what you think the verdict should be, right?

Chandan Singh: The court dismissed the case… When lord Shri Ram couldn’t give justice to his wife, then what decision will the court make? We aren’t against the court’s decision. But court didn’t accept the case only.

Abhinandan:  What did you say?

Chandan Singh:  They didn’t even give me a chance to present my case.

Abhinandan: So, I am reading this article in Firstpost… It’s written that the judge asked you what it is that you want.

Chandan Singh: Yes

Abhinandan: So, did the judge ask you?

Chandan Singh: Yes, they definitely asked.

Abhinandan: So what did you say?

Chandan Singh: Yes. The judge asked me what I wanted. He said that this is a very ancinet matter, where will you get Ram and Sita from now?

Abhinandan: Yes.

Chandan Singh: So, you should read the complaint that I have filed. I have specified that the sacred text is my basis! I will only be able to produce them (in court).

Abhinandan: Okay, so you mean that you will present the text as the proof itself, that this is what is written in it.

Chandan Singh:  Yes…That was my basis. I was affected after reading the text. I submitted the case according to it and have sought justice for Sita Ma. I am being framed in a political conspiracy against the harbingers of justice.

Abhinandan: Sorry, who framed you?

Chandan Singh: Political parties began taking an interest in this.

Abhinandan: Okay.

Chandan Singh:  And they portrayed me as anti-Ram and anti-Hindu in front of the whole world. Whereas this is not true, I have only spoken about getting justice.

Abhinandan: But

Chandan Singh:  Is it wrong to raise your voice and seek justice for Sita Ma?

Abhinandan :  It’s definitely not wrong. All I am asking you is what did you say when the judge asked you about what you wanted. So how should she get justice, what do you think Sita Ma should get? Any monetary compensation, equal stake in the Ayodhya temple?

Abhinandan: One minute, Thakur Sahab, can I please complete my question!

Abhinandan:   When the Shri Ram temple gets built in Ayodhya, do you want Sita Ma get an equal share in it? Apart from the temple Ram ji has nothing left then what will Sita Ma get?

Chandan Singh: In Ayodhya there should be a township by the name Mithila for Sita Ma

Abhinandan: Okay, so you want the court to give this decision?

Chandan Singh: Yes.

Abhinandan: Compensation.

Chandan Singh: Yes.

Abhinandan:  But you do not want any punishment for Shri Ram?

Chandan Singh:  No. None.

Abhinandan:  Okay, it is commendable that your focus is always on justice. Who else have you helped get justice? You must be appearing in court often. So what kind of cases do you fight on an ordinary basis?

Chandan Singh: Yes. Right now I have filed a case against Farooq Abdullah Sahib.

Abhinandan: Okay because he danced like that without any shame during the NDTV award show? I saw that. He danced like that… dhadak dhadak…. Felt very bad after watching that. Did you file the case because of this? Why did you file the case?

Chandan Singh: What?

Chandan Singh:  Did you file a case against Farooq Abdullah because of his dancing? What was the reason behind filing the case?

Chandan Singh:  No no. He had said that the entire Indian armed force would not be able to defeat terrorism, even if they get together. He has insulted the nation’s army, the soldiers. That’s why!

Abhinandan :  Okay so does your house run because of your work as a lawyer? How do you…You are a lawyer professionally, right?

Chandan Singh:  Yes, I am a lawyer by profession

Abhinandan :  So what other kind… I mean this recent case that you have filed, you wouldn’t have gotten paid for that…so how do you run your house (earn)? What kind of cases do you take up? If I were to come to you then what kind of a case would you take up?

Chandan Singh: Yes, tell me…. Any case in the world!

Abhinandan: So right now what cases are you fighting? Shri Ram may not have arranged money for you, but a miracle can happen! It isn’t unheard of. They say that often in the world when we ask for something we don’t get it and when we don’t ask, we end up getting a lot more…

Chandan Singh: Yes, tell me.

Abhinandan: Hmm

Chandan Singh:  I don’t fight cases for money, I fight for justice!

Abhinandan: How do you run your house Thakur Sahab?

Chandan Singh:  How do I run my house?

Abhinandan:  Hmm.

Chandan Singh:  I don’t really have any material desires, my expenses are limited. I only want food for my stomach and clothes for my body…I don’t have any other desires.

Abhinandan:  Yes, but how do you manage to afford that? Because if you don’t take money for cases… a man has to live after all.

Chandan Singh:  Yes, yes definitely. My father’s pension keeps me afloat. My father was a teacher… We get to eat because of his money.

Abhinandan:  So he provides the bread

Chandan Singh : And I provide justice!

Abhinandan: Ah and you advocate and deliver justice!

Chandan Singh:  Yes… I have also filed a case against Raghuvansh babu.

Abhinandan: Raghuvansh Prasad who is from Rashtriya Janta Dal (RJD)

Chandan Singh:   Yes… From RJD…He had said that it is written in the Vedas that even the saints used to eat beef. I have registered a case against this! And have also filed a case against Farooq Abdullah. On December 8, the court had ordered that the FIR should be filed but till date the FIR has not been lodged. After all they are influential people and I don’t know why political parties are targeting me!

Abhinandan:  Where did you study law from Thakur Sahab?

Chandan Singh:  I have studied law from Muzzafarpur, Bihar University.

Abhinandan:  How many years did you study there?

Chandan Singh: I studied there for three years.

Abhinandan: Wow! You have studied quite a bit…Must have paid the fees also…Fees? Did your father give it?

Chandan Singh:  Fees?

Abhinandan: You must have paid the fees? Fees?

Chandan Singh:  Yes, If we don’t pay the fees then how will we study?

Abhinandan: That is what, your father has helped you become a capable educated man, right?

Chandan Singh:  Yes, yes. Because of my father’s money.

Abhinandan: Okay, okay, that is very good. One more thing, does the court have time for all these cases? Because in Delhi…Even if you fight a case, there are thousands of cases in the High Court or even in the Karkardooma court, a lot of time goes by…Even someone dear to us, you know, if something happens-God forbid- death, murder… But the court finds time for such old cases as well?

Chandan Singh:  See these things come under the daily function of the court  and I am no one to comment on that

Abhinandan:  Okay. Okay.

Chandan Singh: Why are so many cases pending…The judiciary has its own process. It could be because of shortage of staff, work pressure…I don’t want to get into those reasons!

Abhinandan:  No, what I am asking is that the people who are still alive, who are suffering, who have undergone some tragedy, there isn’t enough time for their cases… In Sitamarhi are the courts able to find time for cases that go back to such an old time?

Chandan Singh: Sir, I wasn’t able to understand you. Can you repeat your question?

Abhinandan: Hmmm what I am asking is that the courts here in Delhi, here the courts don’t even have the time to give justice to the ones who are living… because there are so many pending cases…in your area the courts have time for such old cases also?

Chandan Singh: They have to make time.

Abhinandan:  Okay okay…What will you do next? This case has been dismissed.

Chandan Singh: Yes definitely…I haven’t seen the rejection order till now either!

Abhinandan: Hmm

Chandan Singh:  Yes… I will take a look at the order of rejection and then contemplate. In order to get justice for Sita Ma, no matter how many difficulties I may have to face, I will face them! I want to use this platform to say one more thing, my aim is to fight for justice for Sita Ma, not to offend any religion or religion’s god. If I have offended anyone then I would like to sincerely apologize to the people of this country. I would specifically like to ask the political parties to not give this a religious connotation. This matter is related to justice; do not do politics in the name of religion.

Abhinandan:  So this is a gender issue and not a religious issue. This is what you are trying to say, correct?

Chandan Singh: Yes…Correct. You people, I mean all the political parties, are the ones trying to give this a religious spin and are making a mountain out of a molehill!  I am only talking about justice.

Abhinandan: Okay!

Abhinandan:  Okay…I wanted to ask you one more question.

Chandan Singh:  Yes…Tell me.

Abhinandan : There is one section 498 that I think pertains to dowry related harassment.

Abhinandan:  Hello?

Chandan Singh: Yes tell me.

Abhinandan: Whose voice is this in the middle… Could it be an announcement from the heavens?

Chandan Singh: What?

Abhinandan: I can hear someone else’s voice?

Chandan Singh: Yes, tell me.

Abhinandan: Whose voice is this?

Chandan Singh: Voice?

Abhinandan:  This is amazing…. I can hear someone’s voice in the middle?

Chandan Singh:  No, no… That’s someone at the shop next door.

Abhinandan:  Oh a shop…I thought maybe… Okay, tell us there is a Section 498 right,? Harassment  is non-bailable, have you thought of filing under that section? That could get Sita Ma justice in a second, no?

Chandan Singh:  No I sought guidance from the court in this matter.

Abhinandan: Hmmm, okay!!

Chandan Singh: Yes.

Abhinandan: I see!

Abhinandan:  Okay so in any case congratulations to you that you are raising gender issues, however you should also raise more recent gender issues… not just old issues because the women these days will benefit more!

Chandan Singh:  Sir this is also a matter of women harassment, that’s what I thought of before taking up this case.

Abhinandan:  Yes.

Chandan Singh:  And, we should explain that to the people of the nation, especially the women, we should make all the women understand and women should come forward to fight for Sita Ma. And I want to say one thing again.

Chandan Singh: ******Quoting a poem by Ramdhari Singh Dinkar. The poem is about how mighty people can face all odds and still come out winning.******

Abhinandan: Superb! Superb! True words… True words.

Chandan Singh: Referring to the same poem.

Abhinandan:  Definitely definitely! It’s been a pleasure talking to you, may you keep seeking justice, congratulations to your father…He is running the household and you are seeking justice for the world!

Chandan Singh: Yes…. Thank you!

Abhinandan: Namashkaar!
