Bihar Police has arrested Rocky Yadav (25), the son of Janata Dal United (JDU) leader Manorama Devi and Bindi Yadav, for allegedly murdering Aditya Kumar Sachdeva (19). Police had been searching for Rocky for four days, having dispatched special investigation teams (SITs) across three states. He was finally arrested from a hot-mixing plant at Mastpura near Bodh Gaya.

The plant is owned by Rocky’s father, Bindeshwari Prasad Yadav, aka Bindi, who was arrested on Saturday night on charges of harbouring an accused. The police arrested Bindi and his bodyguard within hours of the incident being reported, even as Rocky managed to escape.

Garima Malik, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Gaya, told Newslaundry that the police had booked Bindi and his bodyguard Rajesh Kumar on charges of “criminal conspiracy and harbouring the accused”.

“Rocky has been arrested and his weapon seized. The others who are involved in the murder will be arrested soon,” SSP Garima told Newslaundry.

According to police sources, the weapon, an imported Berreta pistol, has a licence obtained from Delhi. However, the police is yet to clarify if Rocky will be charged with murder (IPC Section 302) or with culpable homicide, not amounting to murder (IPC Section 304).

If Manorama Devi, a JDU Member of the Legislative Council, is found guilty of helping Rocky, she will also be prosecuted, said police officials. Police also found bottles of alcohol while searching Bindi’s residence, which is another charge that is likely to be added, considering Bihar is now a dry state.

Manorama Devi’s husband Bindi is known as the local bahubali (strongman) and has a criminal history. Although he may be a better known name outside Bihar now that his son Rocky has been on the front page of newspapers across the country, Bindi is quite a notorious figure in his home state.

Who is Bindi Yadav?

Husband of Manorama Devi, Bindi Yadav has a crime-riddled past. Along with his friend Bacchu Yadav, Bindi allegedly took goonda tax as entry fees from vehicles going to Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh via Gaya. For a long time, they were known as the “entry mafia” and were described as “underworld soulmates”.  Bindi’s name had cropped up in connection with the infamous Babli Jain kidnapping case in Gaya in 2001. They were said to have redefined the ransom rates after asking for a seven-figure amount in this case.

Bindi has been accused of plotting many kidnappings in and outside Gaya district and is allegedly involved in the 2002 abduction of a distillery owner from Bokaro. He is said to have enjoyed the political patronage from the Lalu-Rabri governments in Bihar.

Both Bacchu and Bindi were once booked under Crime Control Act, and Bindi was also arrested in 2009 when he was Chairman of Gaya District Board, for allegedly possessing an illegal weapon. Police acted on a tip off and seized an illegal automatic rifle and many rounds of ammunition from him. Bindi was sent to jail.

He was also jailed in 2011 under the Arms Act, for possessing sophisticated weapons, but got bail later on.

Before being associated with the RJD, Bindi had fought and lost an election as an independent candidate. After joining the RJD, he contested elections from the Gurua seat of Gaya in 2010, but lost to Bharatiya Janata Party’s Surendra Prasad Sinha. Bindi’s brother Sheetal Yadav had once faced sedition charges, and was also elected vice chairman of Gaya Zila Parishad in 2011.

Rocky’s guardian angel

Bindi continues to command a certain amount of awe from the authorities. He defended his absconding son Rocky and blamed Aditya for the scuffle. According to Bindi, his son fired at Aditya in self-defence. Bindi has stated that his son took out his licensed pistol in defence and that the youth was killed by mistake.

Aditya was from a well-known and reputed  business family of  Gaya. His father, Shyamsunder Sachdeva, registered an FIR on the basis of the version given by Aditya’s friend Ayush, who was also in the car at the time of the attack. Ayush had recalled when Aditya tried overtaking the SUV, its occupants started firing shots in the air, and overtook Aditya’s car. Ayush added that the men pulled Aditya out, beat him up and shot at him.

Police say Rocky confessed when he was arrested.
