If you are a diligent about reading your morning newspaper and read it all the way to the international or world pages, then you may have read snippets about the devastating flood and cyclone in Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. So far, floods and landslides in Sri Lanka have claimed 92 lives, even as more than 100 people have gone missing. Meanwhile the cyclone in Bangladesh has claimed close to 24 lives.

Most major international news publications like BBCCNN and so on have carried news on the natural calamities in Sri Lanka and Bangladesh on their websites. Big Media in India, however, gave it scant attention. The Delhi editions of English dailies such as The Times of IndiaHindustan Times and The Indian Express did not carry a single report on the flood situation in Sri Lanka today. The Hindu, however, carried a report on its international pages on Pakistan offering help to Sri Lanka. On Sunday, The Times of India carried a small report on its global page on the death toll in Sri Lanka. The Indian Express carried a more detailed anchor story, again on the international pages. The Hindu also carried a story on its international pages yesterday. Hindustan Times had just a need-to-know update on the tragedy.

Similarly, little has been written about the cyclone Roanu hitting Bangladesh, even though it has rendered half a million Bangladeshis homeless. The Times of India wrote a small three-paragraph report on its global pages. The Hindu just had a picture that showed the plight of displaced locals. The Hindustan Times carried an article on its World page, which had some details about the cyclone, while The Indian Express carried a lead story on its international pages. As far as disaster reporting goes, it seems like earthquakes — and not floods and cyclones — make more of a news splash.
