JNU: Student missing after scuffle with ABVP member
Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student Najeeb Ahmed is reportedly missing since Saturday after alleged scuffle with Akhil Bharatiya Vidhya Parishad (ABVP) member. Najeeb, a MSc. biotechnology student and resident of Mahi Mandavi hostel, allegedly slapped the ABVP candidate – who was holding a door-to-door campaign for the (hostel) mess committee election on the night of October 14.
Ahmed, 27, had joined the hostel barely 15 days ago. According to JNU students’ union (JNUSU) president Mohit Kumar Pandey “an ABVP activist Vikrant, while on a campaign in Mahi Mandavi hostel late last Friday (14th October), had a confrontation with Najeeb. Vikrant summoned a throng of people, inciting communal hatred against Najeeb .The group of goons, assembled at the beck and call of the ABVP activist, proceeded to intimidate and physically threaten and beat up Najeeb.”
Najeeb was taken to the hostel warden, where he apologised for his conduct. However, according to Pandey, the verbal assault from ABVP supporters continued. While Najeeb’s mother reached JNU to meet him and the authorities, his whereabouts are unknown since Saturday morning.
JNUSU led a protest, on Sunday, seeking a first information report (FIR) to be registered against the perpetrators from the university’s side. Meanwhile, on the basis of a complaint by his parents, a case has been reportedly registered at Vasant Kunj (North) police station under Section 365 of IPC (kidnapping with intent secretly and wrongfully to confine person).
