DUSU: ABVP’s back, for the fourth time in a row

The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) stopped just short of making a clean sweep and a hattrick in the Delhi University Students Election. ABVP won three seats out of the total four.

Congress-backed National Students Union of India (NSUI) has returned to the DUSU, having won the seat of Joint Secretary. The Left-leaning All India Students Association (AISA) failed to leave a mark this year. Fortunately for them, they’ve got Jawaharlal Nehru University’s students’ union to claim as their own.

ABVP scored 16,537 votes for President, 15,592 for Vice President and 15,518 for Secretary. NSUI scored 16,526 votes as it won the post of Joint Secretary, beating ABVP by a margin of 2,466 votes.

ABVP’s Amit Tanwar won the post of President. Priyanka Chabri is the new Vice-president and Ankit Snagwan is the Secretary. Outside the polling office, ABVP supporters erupted in joy over the results and started distributing laddoos amongst everyone.

NSUI’s Mohit Sangwan won the Joint Secretary post. NSUI has managed to win a seat after sitting outside the union for the past two years. In a press statement, NSUI National President Amrita Dhawan said, “This is the beginning of the end of ABVP in Delhi University as evident from the massive increase in the vote share of NSUI.”

Despite Chhatra Yuva Sangharsh Samiti (AAP’s student wing) pulling out of this year’s election, AISA did not witness a surge in their vote count. They did not manage to gather over 10,000 votes for any post.

Their highest vote share this year is at 8,473, for the post of Secretary (last year, their highest vote share was for the post of Joint Secretary, at 10,045 votes).
