Prodyut Bora Quits BJP

Making a scathing attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and party president Amit Shah, the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) executive member from Assam and former IT cell national convener Prodyut Bora has quit the party.

In a detailed resignation letter, Bora alleges the BJP has failed to live up to most of its pre-polls promises, including that of coming up with long-term solutions to tackle the Bangladeshi immigration issue and Assam’s long-pending flood crisis.

Bora also criticised the Commerce Ministry for scrapping of the North East Industrial and Investment Policy (NEIPP) 2007, without putting an alternate policy in its place.

Bora, in the resignation letter, claimed that the party, under Modi, had started subverting its democratic tradition. Bora also came down heavily on Shah for his “individualised/centralised style of decision-making”.

In another allegation, Bora accused the BJP’s Assam state leadership of being “politically corrupt” and being controlled by the Congress.

Bora, a St. Stephen’s and Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, alumnus, was one of the important backroom boys in the 2009 elections. The only time he had contested elections (Assam assembly elections in 2011), he had lost to the Congress’ Himanta Biswa Sarma.
