The farmers said if their demands are not met, they will protest in Varanasi against PM Modi’s nomination.
Tamil Nadu farmers have once again knocked the political corridors of the national capital – with demands of loan waiver, irrigation, higher minimum support price, and implementation of the Swaminathan Committee’s recommendations.
Protesting at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar, farmers said the promises made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi ahead of the 2019 elections remain unfulfilled. Modi had reportedly promised to double the income of farmers by 2022 and implement the Swaminathan Committee’s recommendations, including deciding the MSP as per the cost of production.
The farmers, symbolically sitting with alleged human skulls and bones, told Newslaundry that about “one lakh farmers had died by suicide across India under the Modi regime”. One of them said both the state and central governments have been neglecting farmers, and if their demands are not met, they will protest in Varanasi against PM Modi’s nomination.
“Please, please save farmers,” said one of the protesters, who also accused the Delhi police of excesses. They alleged that the cops had assaulted them and did not allow them to speak to the media.
