Exit polls: BJP may form govt in Assam, Mamata to retain power in Bengal

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) may soon form its first government in Assam, and Mamata Banerjee will retain power in West Bengal, if exit polls are to be believed.

ABP-Ananda’s exit polls gave the Trinamool Congress 163 seats in Bengal, while the Left and Congress together are slated to get 126 seats. C-Voter’s predictions are along the same lines, with TMC getting 167 seats, and Left+ getting 120.

However, India Today’s exit polls gave a massive majority to the TMC with 243 seats, while the Left+ languishes with 43 seats. Chanakya and News Nation’s estimates are more conservatives, with the TMC getting 173 and 153 seats respectively, while Left+ is estimated to win 115 and 136 seats respectively.

For Assam, India Today, Chanakya, C-Voter, India Today and ABP are all suggesting a win for the BJP and its allies, with the numbers ranging from 53 seats in the conservative estimate, to 90 seats maximum. This means that all pollsters suggest that Tarun Gogoi might just have to bid adieu to the Chief Minister’s chair which he has warmed for the last 15 years.

In Tamil Nadu, the exit polls predicted a close contest between the Karunanidhi’s DMK and Jayalalithaa’s AIADMK. While C-Voter predicted a win for Amma with 139 seats, both India Today and News Nation predict that Karunanidhi with return to power, with 132 and 116 seats respectively.

For Kerala, both India TV and India Today are predicting a win for the Left and its allies. Overall, the exit polls bring bad tidings for the Congress party in all the states.
