Centre to reduce name of districts under ‘Red Corridor’

For the first time after the districts affected by Left-Wing Extremists (LWE) were identified and marked as per their violence profile in 2006, the Central Government is set to redraw the ‘Red Corridor.’ According to The Hindu the government is likely to strike off names of approximately 20 districts from 106 LWE affected district list. The Centre is waiting for responses from the respective states before taking a final decision.

However, the new list has not been made public considering the sensitivity of the issue. LWE affected districts were allotted Rs.30 crore each annually for development work.

The 106 LWE districts are across10 states – Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, West Bengal, Odisha, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra.

This year, the LWE violence has seen an increase with 605 incidents and deaths reported till June as compared to 592 incidents and 120 deaths reported till June 2015.
