CBSE brings back Class X Board exam, extends three language policy to Class X
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has decided to make Class X Board exams mandatory from 2018, five years after the exam was made optional for students. The decision was taken by the CBSE’s Governing Body (GB) on Tuesday and will require the approval of the Human Resource Development (HRD) Ministry before it is implemented.
A member of the GB told The Indian Express that the move to make the Board exam compulsory was backed by a large number of teachers and principals from CBSE-affiliated schools. “Over the last few months, CBSE and HRD Ministry have met teachers and principals from across the country to get their feedback on Boards and CCE [Continuous Comprehensive Evaluation]. The overwhelming support was for the return of exams,” the member told IE.
The Board also resolved to implement the three-language formula, which was previously followed only till Class VIII, up to Class X. Under the National Education Policy, students in Hindi-speaking states should learn a modern Indian language, apart from Hindi and English and, in non-Hindi-speaking states, they should learn Hindi along with the regional language and English.
CBSE also decided that principals of affiliated schools would have to pass an eligibility test to qualify for the post. The test will be designed along the lines of the Central Teacher Eligibility Test, according to a GB member.
