IT workers’ forum files petition against Tech Mahindra layoffs

Forum For IT Employees (FITE) has requested the Maharashtra labour commissioner to stop Tech Mahindra from illegally firing IT employees immediately, and establish conciliation between the management and staff.

Elavarasan Raja of FITE, Pune has requested the labour commissioner to “intervene and order Tech Mahindra to stop such illegal removals forthwith,” in a petition. Raja also said that the company’s restructuring activity has not been done on the basis of employees’ performance. He added that thousands of employees who are being terminated are actually good performers and were rated good in appraisals earlier and also were appreciated and awarded for their work from both the client and the company, an ET report stated.

However, Tech Mahindra has denied all such claims. “We continue to implement strategies to meet the changing demands of business in the current global economic environment. As a performance-driven organisation, we assess employee performance on a regular basis and take actions wherever necessary,” they said.

Over the past month, there have been several reports about mass-layoffs at leading IT-firms including Infosys, Wipro, Tech Mahindra, Cognizant among others. Reports suggest that the seven biggest IT-firms plan to layoff at least 56,000 employees this year, more than double the number people laid off last year.
