Anil Kumble resigns due to ‘untenable partnership’ with Virat Kohli

Just before the Indian cricket team was to leave for the West Indies tour, Indian coach Anil Kumble finally stepped down from his post. After India lost the Champions Trophy finale, the tension between the coach and the team surfaced with Kumble tweeting about the “untenable partnership” with Virat Kohli.

Kumble has chosen to resign despite being offered a one-year extension of his tenure, which was supported by Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) members including Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, VVS Laxman. BCCI tweeted that even though they had offered an extension to Kumble, he decided to turn down the offer and resign.

On Tuesday, Kumble tweeted about the reservations of the captain and the BCCI against his ways and having him as a coach. He thanked the CAC for his tenure and for nominating him again. He added that he was surprised by this decision and in the light of the ‘reservations’, he would like to hand over the responsibility to whoever the CAC and BCCI see fit.

On Monday night, Indian skipper Virat Kohli and Kumble had met the BCCI’s secretary, CEO and general manager.

TOI reported that the removal was brought about after his bashing of players after the team lost to Pakistan on Sunday.
