Mayawati’s resignation accepted by Vice-President Hamid Ansari
Vice-President Hamid Ansari on Thursday accepted the resignation of Mayawati, the three-times Rajya Sabha MP and former Uttar Pradesh chief minister, from the Upper House. The Vice-President is the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha.
Mayawati had tendered her resignation on Tuesday after she was stopped from speaking about the atrocities against Dalits in Saharanpur. After she walked out of the Rajya Sabha, she was also accused of insulting the chairperson of the Upper House. Read more here.
While BJP leaders mocked Mayawati’s resignation, others came forward in her support. This included former chief minister of Bihar Lalu Prasad Yadav who offered her a seat from Bihar. “If Mayawati wishes, we will send her to Rajya Sabha from Bihar,” the Rashtriya Janata Dal president, whose party has 80 MLAs in the 243-member Bihar Legislative Assembly, was quoted as saying by NDTV.
