Supreme Court asks NIA to probe Kerala ‘love jihad’ case

The Supreme Court asked the National Investigation Agency to probe Kerala’s ‘love jihad’ case pertaining to a Hindu woman converting to Islam and marrying a Muslim man.

Shafin Jahan, a resident of Kerala, had challenged the annulment of his marriage by the Kerala High Court, which had ordered the police to probe such cases. His ‘wife’ had converted to Islam before marrying Jahan.

A bench of Chief Justice JS Khehar and Justice DY Chandrachud said RV Raveendran, a retired judge of the apex court, would supervise the investigation.

According to The Telegraph, Ashokan KM, the woman’s father, had claimed that there was a “well-oiled systematic mechanism” for conversion and Islamic radicalisation.

The court had said that it was entrusting the task to the National Investigation Agency as a neutral agency to get a “whole picture” and find out whether the particular instance was limited to a “small pocket” or there was “something wider” to the issue.

This entire decision has several people scratching their heads and questioning the agency accorded to the woman.
