HC slams CBI for ‘complete lack of interest’ in Najeeb case, missing student’s mother detained

The Delhi High Court on Monday hauled up the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for “complete lack of interest” in investigating the disappearance of JNU student Najeeb Ahmed. The observation was made on a plea filed by the missing student’s mother, Fatima Nafees, seeking directions from the court to trace her son who disappeared from the university’s Mahi-Mandvi hostel on October 15 last year.

The court had handed over the probe to the CBI five months ago. A bench of Justices GS Sistani and Chander Shekhar observed that there was “no result either ways. No result even on paper”.

The strong remarks by the bench came after the judges noticed contradictions in what the CBI had said in court, and what it had indicated in its status report on the issue of analysis of the calls and messages of the suspect students in the case, The Indian Express reported. Najeeb’s family has alleged that he went missing from JNU after a row with students affiliated to the ABVP.

While the hearing was going on in court, Najeeb’s mother was detained, and allegedly manhandled by the Delhi Police, along with some students outside the court, where she was protesting against the CBI’s investigation.

A video, which soon went viral on social media, showed women police personnel dragging Fatima on the road and forcing her inside a police jeep, Firstpost reported.
