RaGa’s ‘Gabbar Singh Tax’ remark made front-page news in Surat dailies

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s speech on Sunday in Gujarat’s Bhavnagar was aired live without interruption across most mainstream news channels. However, when it came to Congress’ perpetual heir-in-waiting Rahul Gandhi’s speech at Surat yesterday, it was juxtaposed with BJP Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad’s press conference.

However, Gandhi’s ‘Gabbar Singh Tax’ remark was cause for much mirth on social media, with Tweeples giving their own full form of GST. (See this thread for more on that.)

The rally and the remark were also splashed across front pages of prominent dailies in Surat like Sandesh, Gujarat Samachar and Hindi daily Dainik Bhaskar.

The headline in Sandesh quoting Gandhi says, BJP won’t be able to buy Gujaratis even with the entire country’s budget.
The strap above the headline in Gujarat Samachar, says, ‘Rahul’s taunt- GST means Gabbar Singh Tax’.

The headline is the same as Sandesh’s, and says ‘Nobody can buy the public of Guj – Rahul Gandhi’. The report also states that Gandhi targeted Amit Shah’s son Jay Shah. Another part of the speech that is highlighted in the report states, ‘Industrialists were let off with 1.60 crores, Tata Nano was given 35 thousand crores, but debts of farmers are not forgiven’.

Dainik Bhaskar‘s Surat edition also gave prominence to Gandhi’s  speech as the lead copy on the front page. The headline highlights the GST remark, while the body copy quotes liberally from Gandhi’s speech.
