Khichdi as national food?
Navbharat Times has caused a flutter of sorts on Twitter with their report on the likelihood of Khichdi being designated India’s national food. The report that came out yesterday is based on unnamed “sources” in the Union Ministry of Food Processing and, we guess, is as reliable as NBT reporter’s sources. According to the report, the Centre will present Khichdi as India’s “superfood” on November 4 at the World Food Day event in New Delhi. The report was subsequently picked by DNA, Economic Times and other English dailies. Needless to say, the news hasn’t found much favour among some Tweeples given that Khichdi is not exactly, umm, a compelling contender. After all, this is the land of biryani, tandoori chicken, beef and pork fry, sarson ka saag, aloo pitika, kuzhambu and…okay, you get the point.
Some others were in favour of the humble Khichdi making it as the national dish. Incidentally, it is also one of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s favourite dishes.
Update: According to CNN News 18, government sources said no official announcement of Khichdi as national food has been made.
