Regar linked Afrazul murder to ‘love jihad’ to hide affair with ‘Hindu sister’: Rajsamand chargesheet

The Rajasthan Police have filed a chargesheet in the murder case of Mohammed Afrazul in the state’s Rajsamand, saying that “love jihad” was just a cover used by accused Shambhulal Regar to hide his illicit relationship with the woman whom he called his Hindu sister in the video he recorded of, and justifying, the murder.

The horrifying daylight murder video of West Bengal labourer Afrazul, in which he was hacked to death and burnt by Regar, had been uploaded on social media last month.

The chargesheet, filed in court, says, according to The Indian Express, that “Regar may have raised the whole ‘love jihad’ claim to cover the real motive behind the murder, which was anger over the fact that the woman was still in contact with a labourer from West Bengal called Ballu Sheikh, with whom she had reportedly eloped in 2010”.

Also, the police note that a year before the murder, Regar had started watching videos of Hindu and Muslim fundamentalists, and that “Regar once took the woman to one of his acquaintances, a bank manager, and asked her to ‘make him happy’”.

According to the newspaper, the police found a diary in which Regar had written down all the remarks he made in the murder video.
