Pune police enquire about a Press Club booking made by National Herald journalist Vishwadeepak

On June 30, a Pune police sub-inspector, GR Sonawane, visited the Press Club of India in New Delhi and collected details of a media conference booking made by Vishwadeepak, a journalist with the National Herald, The Telegraph reported. The report also stated that the enquiry could possibly be linked to an alleged plot to target Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s rallies.

According to The Telegraph‘s report, Vishwadeepak had booked the hall for an April 20 media conference that demanded the release of a professor imprisoned on the charge of being a member of a banned Maoist organisation. The professor in question is Delhi University professor GN Saibaba who has been imprisoned for life. On April 20, AS Vasantha, Saibaba’s wife, and several academics held the media conference and sought his release.

The Telegraph‘s report also mentions that the first information report details shared by the enquiring cop “is the same FIR under which several activists were arrested on the charge of instigating violence”. Newslaundry has not been able to verify these details independently.

Those arrested include Saibaba’s lawyer Surendra Gadling, Rona Wilson and Shoma Sen. On June 8, the police had claimed to have found a letter on Wilson’s computer suggesting a plot to target Modi’s rallies.
