Protests erupted across India yesterday against the contentious Citizenship Amendment Act, in response to calls by political parties and civil society groups. The protests were marked by violence in Lucknow and Mangaluru, where two protesters were reportedly killed in police firing. Nearly 1,200 people were detained, according to The Times of India, as protesters took to the streets. In Bengaluru, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, and parts of Delhi, protesters defied the implementation of Section 144 to protest.
