A Jaipur-based journalist died after he was "brutally assaulted...when he was trying to prevent his woman friend from harassment", India Today reported. The assault reportedly took place on December 8.

India Today identified the journalist as Abhishek Soni. The report said:

"Police investigations have revealed that some of the men began harassing the woman, to which Soni put up a resistance. This led to an altercation and soon Soni was brutally attacked with batons and iron rods by the three accused men. Soni suffered grievous injuries and was left writhing in pain at the roadside...He was taken to the SMS hospital in an ambulance where he passed away at the trauma centre late on Wednesday night."

The report quoted Ajay Pal Lamba, the additional commissioner of police (crime), as saying: "We managed to get CCTV footage of the incident. We have arrested one of the accused. Remaining two will also be soon arrested. They are currently absconding. We have formed police teams to nab them."

Based on the woman's statement, the report said, the police registered a case under Sections 323, 341, 354a and 307 of the Indian Penal Code. Charges of murder were added after Soni's death.
