Under watch: Farmers hold ‘parliament’ in Delhi
On July 21, the Delhi Disaster Management Authority gave permission for farmers to enter the capital and hold protests against the Narendra Modi government’s new farm laws. From the next day, the farmers organised Kisan Sansad, or farmers’ parliament, at Jantar Mantar.
The farmers have been protesting along Delhi’s borders since last December, demanding the government withdraw the farm laws, and, since July 22, they have been taking turns to participate in the Jantar Mantar demonstration. In view of the pandemic, they are required to limit the gathering to 200 people.
The protesting farmers are under constant surveillance by security personnel who have been deployed in strength around Jantar Mantar.
