Reporters Without Orders Ep 189: Lakhimpur Kheri violence, Dainik Jagran advertorials
This week, host Ayush Tiwari is joined by Newslaundry’s Basant Kumar and Shivangi Saxena.
The discussion begins with Shivangi and Nidhi’s reportage on the violence at Lakhimpur Kheri. Shivangi says communal tension was rare here before but the violence has changed that. “All the communities are silent but there is a constant tension and fear among them,” she says. “It’s basically a social boycott among the groups.” She also says there are a lot of unanswered questions on the role of Ashish Mishra.
The conversation shifts to Basant’s report on how Dainik Jagran, the best selling Hindi newspaper in Uttar Pradesh, runs advertorials often “disguised” as news reports. He says the bylines of these “reports” have “no connection with reporting whatsoever”.
This and a lot more as they talk about what made news, what didn’t, and what shouldn’t have.
Tune in.
