The Media Rumble podcast: Alex Chapko on challenges unique to India's subscription news market
What problems do Indian publishers face, and what’s the best way to appeal for funding? And what can organisations like Piano, which helps companies monetise digital customers, do to help?
Newslaundry’s Chitranshu Tewari discussed these questions with Alex Chapko, general manager at Piano Software, as a precursor to The Media Rumble 2022.
Alex described challenges in the Indian market, noting that Indian channels “gain most of their revenue from advertisements”. Indian publishers are also “reluctant” to admit their flaws, perhaps due to a lack of good examples in the market to compare themselves with.
He also said reader revenue “may form the future of revenue”, and explained why publishers must create something “unique” for their audiences.
