Twitter may allow news publishers to charge users per article this month

Twitter will allow news publishers to charge a fee on individual articles as opposed to a full subscription, the social media giant’s owner Elon Musk has announced.

“Rolling out next month, this platform will allow media publishers to charge users on a per article basis with one click,” Musk tweeted. “This enables users who would not sign up for a monthly subscription to pay a higher per article price for when they want to read an occasional article.”

Musk did not confirm the date for the proposed launch. It is not clear which media organisations will be eligible for the new monetisation feature.

In 2022, Musk launched Twitter Blue with several perks, including the check-mark badge. The social media firm had also replaced Super Follows with Subscriptions, declaring that Twitter would not take any money from creators for the first 12 months.

It should be remembered that when he took over, Twitter CEO Elon Musk suspended multiple journalists from Twitter, even suspending the Twitter accounts of social media competitor Mastodon. Read all about his so-called “free speech project” here.
