TV Newsance 230: Israel Palestine conflict, Indian media at ground zero
This week started off with an indiscriminate attack on several cities of Israel by Palestinian militant group Hamas. Israel retaliated with air strikes on the Gaza Strip. With the fighting going on, the death toll on both sides is mounting each day.
While this conflict, unlike many other international issues, generated a lot of discussion in the Indian media, there was little nuance in the coverage. We saw the quintessential Indian TV news “ground reporting” from Israel by our usual suspects. But we also saw some very brave reports by journalists of Al Jazeera, BBC and CNN, while India Today’s Ashutosh Mishra provided important insights.
We break down the multiple narratives and explain the conflict while spotlighting the good, bad and downright stupid on TV news.
