Newsance 273: US election, Trump’s triumph and cheer in Indian newsrooms
This week was marked by the presidential elections in the world’s oldest democracy, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s close friend and fan Donald Trump securing a big victory. And as a friend of our honourable PM is a friend of our news anchors - Trump’s win was a cause for celebration on all our Indian news channels.
Some of our usual suspects even described it as the advent of a Hindu raj in America, while some others were overjoyed that the nationalist candidate won. Policy discussions took a backseat, as news anchors spent time imagining what Trump and Kamala would look like if they campaigned in “Indian style”.
Irony died a thousand deaths as our anchors also rallied against bias in American media, criticising mainstream US media outlets for supporting one leader over the other, without an iota of self awareness.
