‘A boon for common people’: What’s fuelling support for Eknath Shinde?

In the first Maharashtra assembly election after the Shiv Sena split and the swearing-in of Eknath Shinde as the Chief Minister, it’s a battle of survival for the rebel leader.

The Eknath Shinde faction is contesting 85 seats, with a direct fight against the Shiv Sena Uddhav Bal Thackeray faction in at least 47 constituencies.   

In a conversation with Newslaundry, Shinde spoke about the current political landscape, Uddhav Thackeray’s leadership, and the political legacy of Anand Dighe. He also looked back at his journey from his army stint to joining the Shiv Sena after hearing Bal Thackeray’s speech and eventually becoming the CM. 

At his rally in Thane, we also spoke to party workers and Shinde supporters to understand the political climate and what draws them to him.
