Indian Express moves SC against HC order calling for fresh apology

The Indian Express has approached the Supreme Court challenging a Gujarat High Court order which refused to accept its apology affidavit over wrong reporting of court proceedings and directed that a fresh apology affidavit be filed, LiveLaw reported.

A bench of Justices BR Gavai and AG Masih has reportedly tagged the matter along with a special leave petition filed by Bennett Coleman and Co Ltd, which publishes the Times of India, against the same court order.

In August last year, the high court had reportedly issued a notice to three newspapers, including The Indian Express and Times of India, seeking their explanation after observing that reports gave a wrong impression that the comments made during a hearing were its final views. 

In September, the court expressed its dissatisfaction with the apology published by the paper and said it did not specify what the apology was about. It granted them three days to tender a fresh public apology in “bold letters at the first page” while clearly informing the public about the “wrong reporting”, according to LiveLaw.
