Poor results, poorer facilities: The schools Nuh’s children are expected to learn in

A country’s future is shaped in its classrooms. But in several government schools in Haryana’s Nuh district, even basic facilities remain out of reach. In some schools, children sit on the floor to study; in others, school buildings are in poor condition. Toilets exist but lack water, while local residents also question the quality and reliability of mid-day meals.

In 2018, Nuh was included in NITI Aayog’s list of aspirational districts, with the aim of accelerating improvements in education, healthcare and basic infrastructure. Eight years on, however, the ground reality in several government schools remains worrying.

Nuh also recorded the state’s lowest performance in the recently announced Haryana Board Class 10 results. The district’s pass percentage was around 69 percent, compared to the state average of 89.60 percent.

To understand what lies behind these numbers, we visited government schools across Nuh. What we found was not just poor academic performance, but the conditions in which children are expected to study.
