7 dead, officials suspended: What happened after the Satya Niketan building collapse?

A five-storey building collapsed in Delhi’s Satya Niketan on Sunday afternoon. So far, 12 people have been pulled out from the debris, with seven deaths confirmed.

Following the incident, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi has suspended its deputy commissioner, executive engineer, superintendent engineer, assistant engineer and junior engineer.

Satya Niketan is home to a large number of Delhi University students, many of whom are forced to live in rented accommodation after failing to secure hostel rooms at their colleges.

A local resident, Varun, said, “The entire building collapsed in one go. I think around 40 people could be trapped under the debris. Some repair work was going on here.”

Police have registered a case and launched an investigation. The Delhi Fire Services said it received information about the collapse shortly after 1.30 pm.
