Delhi’s Detention Day: Protesters picked up, journalists detained
People picked up from the streets. Journalists detained. Reporting phones seized. Delhi’s October 10 protest became a day of sweeping detentions.
Ahead of the protest demanding CEC Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation and opposing SIR, access to Jantar Mantar was choked by layers of barricades and heavy police deployment. People travelling towards Delhi reported being detained on trains, while buses were diverted and students warned against attending.
On the ground, Newslaundry reporters were detained and their work phones seized. They have since been released, but other journalists and YouTubers remained in detention at the time of this update.
What does the right to protest mean if you cannot reach the protest site? And how do journalists show you what is happening when they, too, are put on detention buses?
Watch our ground reports from a day of sweeping police action in the capital. We will continue to report.
