On the ground with Sreenivasan Jain: A day at the Opposition march
Sreenivasan Jain was on the ground in Delhi today as Opposition leaders from the INDIA bloc marched towards the Supreme Court, demanding accountability from the Election Commission and the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Unlike in the past few days, when they aggressively detained protesters, Delhi Police appeared to take on the role of a bystander. Starting from the Constitution Club, thousands of protesters, including activists, student groups and party workers, broke through the barricades and moved on to Ashoka Road and Janpath, as they tried to make their way towards the Supreme Court. Senior Congress leaders reached the court to file their petition, challenging alleged large-scale voter deletions and irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise.
The crowd was a mix of activists, student groups and party members. Jain described “a sea of laal topis” with a sizable presence of Samajwadi Party workers. Other Opposition leaders like the RJD’s Tejashwi Yadav, NCP(SP)’s Supriya Sule and several other MPs marched too.
