Surviving a punishing Church: The story of Sr Ranit and Stand By Me
In 2018, Sister Ranit became the first Catholic nun in India to file a rape complaint against a bishop, accusing Jalandhar Bishop Franco Mulakkal of sexual assault. Franco was acquitted by the trial court in 2022. Sister Ranit’s appeal is pending before the Kerala High Court.
Isolated and left without financial support from the Church, Sister Ranit and her two companion nuns began rebuilding their lives through Stand By Me, a sewing enterprise supported by well-wishers.
The News Minute’s Maria Teresa Raju traces their journey from a historic protest, a gruelling trial, and the fight for survival that followed.
