Aveek Sarkar steps down as chief editor
Earlier today, Aveek Sarkar formally stepped down as chief editor of The Telegraph and Anandabazar Patrika, handing over the responsibility to his brother Arup. The decision was explained as “part of the ongoing process of streamlining news operations”.
A notice by ABP’s managing director and chief executive officer Dipankar Das Purkayastha informed employees that R Rajagopal was now the editor of The Telegraph and Anirban Chattopadhyay had been appointed editor of Ebela and Anandabazar Patrika. Aveek Sarkar, 71, will continue as ABP Group’s vice-chairman and editor emeritus. Established in 1922, the ABP Group publishes some of Bengal’s most respected and popular publications.
Ever since the results of the recent assembly elections made clear that West Bengal’s support for Trinamool Congress and Mamata Banerjee remains unabated, all eyes have been on ABP Pvt Ltd. The latter has enjoyed much virtual acclaim of late for its punny headlines and its readiness to attack TMC and Banerjee. When TMC won so emphatically in the assembly elections, there were many speculations that heads would roll.
Whether Sarkar’s decision to step down is related to Banerjee’s disapproval of ABP is unknown. Sarkar was available for comment, but Purkayastha told Firstpost that the decision had nothing to do with TMC.
