Construction is prohibited across Delhi’s Zone-O. But on the ground, the reality appears different, with private and government construction continuing in several areas.
The Delhi Development Authority and Municipal Corporation of Delhi have repeatedly claimed action against illegal construction in Zone-O, including demolitions. Yet a ground visit to several parts, especially the Yamuna floodplain, revealed construction continuing despite the restrictions.
In Wazirabad, construction was underway at several locations. In Gali No. 9, a road had been occupied for construction, with machinery, workers and building material blocking public movement. Local activist Shehzad Khan questioned why construction continues even after notices are issued, and whether officials are failing to act against such violations.
The construction is not limited to private buildings. A primary school run by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi in Wazirabad village was also found undergoing construction, raising questions about government construction in an area where building activity is prohibited.
The ecologically sensitive Yamuna floodplain plays an important role in flood management and environmental protection.
