Chase episode 6: Kashmir: Inside a Friday Protest
Kashmir’s burning — we’re reading the news, we’ve seen the pictures. While the violence has been explosive since militant Burhan Wani’s funeral, there’s a pattern of unrest that’s become almost systematic in Srinagar for years now.
It was in the summer of 2008 that there was a distinct change: large numbers of civilians took to the streets, armed with stones, to protest against the controversial Amarnath land transfer. Four boys took to stone pelting at the time and over the years, these boys have continued their protest at weekly stone pelting marches, every Friday.
Directors and reporters Avalok Langer and Sahil Ali show you how a protest unfolds in Kashmir in the latest documentary from Chase, a collaboration between Scoopwhoop and Newslaundry. Kashmir: Inside a Friday Protest offers an insight into the tormented complexities of this state and the vicious cycles it follows. Also, listen up for the original score by Manas Shankar Baruha.
