BJP IT cell secretary arrested for circulating fake images and video on social media
Tarun Sengupta, BJP’s IT cell secretary, was arrested from Asansol on Wednesday by the Criminal Investigation Department for “spreading fake news and creating communal disharmony”. He is the third person to be arrested after the Kolkata Police registered two non-bailable cases against BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma and Bhabatosh Chatterjee.
Sengupta has been charged under non-bailable sections of the Indian Penal Code and will be produced in Suri court on Wednesday.
In an earlier public meeting in East Midnapore district, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had said, “The people of Bengal will not tolerate the fact that the BJP is using social media platforms to fake pictures and fake news to meet their political ends.”
The Chief Minister also announced that a judicial inquiry will be conducted to investigate the people responsible for the recent clashes in the state. The inquiry will be headed by retired judges of the Calcutta High Court.
