Najeeb Ahmad case: Delhi High Court reprimands CBI for filing old report

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) showed it’s clueless about the disappearance of JNU student Najeeb Ahmad when it ended up submitting the same old report in the Delhi High Court on Tuesday. “The case was not transferred to the agency (CBI) for fun. There is nothing new in the report. It is the same report of July 17,” the high court observed.

The court had transferred the case to the CBI on May 16 on a plea filed by Najeeb’s mother Fatima Nafees against the Delhi Police’s exceedingly slow progress in the matter. A bench of Justice GS Sistani and Justice Rekha Palli had heard the case on July 17 when the CBI had sought more time for the investigation.

“We did not adjourn matter on that date to examine this two-and-a-half page scrap today,” the bench told the agency. It also directed the CBI to file a fresh status report before the next date of hearing scheduled for September 6. “What was the idea of listing it today? Just to say the report has been filed,” the bench asked the CBI.

“Even during the previous hearings, the CBI appeared clueless and sought more time to look into the matter. The act of CBI is really shocking as it had the audacity to file a one-month-old status report in a sealed envelope,” said Nadeem Khan, an activist who is following the case. Meanwhile, a protest demonstration is being planned tomorrow at the CBI headquarters by students and activists.

The 27-year-old M Sc Biotechnology student had gone missing allegedly a day after an altercation with some members of the ABVP, the students’ wing of the RSS, on the night of October 16, 2016. ABVP activists in JNU have denied any involvement in his disappearance.
