BHU: Protests from around the country at a glance

College students around the country rallied together to protest the brutal police lathicharge against the students of Banaras Hindu University (BHU) on September 22. The protests were held in various universities including Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi University, Hyderabad University, Aligarh Muslim University, and Jadavpur University, etc.

Students strongly condemned the police’s actions against the BHU students who were peacefully protesting over allegations of molestation and demanding action against the culprits. The matter became a national issue after videos surfaced on social media showing the police assaulting the students many of them women. Several of them suffered injuries severe enough to require hospitalisation.

The protesters extended their solidarity with the fighting students in BHU and affirmed that the safety of women should not be at the cost of freedom—referring to BHU’s rules that dictate the mobility of women after hours.
