A review of NL Hafta by Sandeep and Dhiraj

Hi NL Team,

I have been a subscriber of Newslaundry for a while now.  I have also been a Newslaundry evangelist doing my bit to convince people to get a subscription. I believe Hafta is a forum for free-spirited debates around issues of public relevance spanning across ideological spectrums.

Nuance and perspective are what gets me hooked onto the podcast and also a reason for me to continue my subscription.

However, I do see instances of Hafta panellists discussing and debating twitter threads often spending precious airtime over controversies which probably don’t warrant that kind of attention.

Issues like the one discussed on Hafta 177 (Airtel) are pretty commonplace on social media and are usually raked up either out of bigotry/ignorance of an individual or bots specifically meant to peddle this kind of agenda.

I would rather prefer to hear a debate on public policy or competitive sports (World Cup, for instance, haven’t seen that brought up for that matter) on Hafta than a controversy raked up on Twitter specifically made so to garner attention.

I understand the need to discuss all kinds of issues, but do hope serious ones find more time for debate and deliberation.

Open for criticism on the opinions expressed 🙂

Cheers!

Thanks

Sandeep

Hi All,

To begin with Abhinandan, do you really mean that “ones that make you throw up can’t be dined with”. Do you realise the gravity of that statement?

Imagine a Hindu vegetarian telling that to a non-vegetarian Hindu…

A Muslim who eats beef being told that by a Hindu…

A Christian who eats Pork being told that by a Muslim…

Yes, I have taken it literally — the puking and the eating. But that is to make a point, this statement makes you conservative by your own definition — “holding to traditional attitudes and values and cautious about change or innovation, typically in relation to politics or religion.”
