Veteran journalist Kuldip Nayar dies at the age of 95

Veteran journalist and renowned author Kuldip Nayar passed away at the age of 95 at the Escorts Hospital in Delhi on Thursday. 

His last rites will be performed at the Lodhi Road crematorium at 1 pm today.

During the span of his long career, Nayar served as Press Information Officer to former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri, as well as to former Union Home Minister Govind Ballabh Pant belonging to the Congress.

Among the many hats that he donned during his career, were those of diplomat, human rights activist, parliamentarian, author and columnist.

As a journalist, he worked with a wide range of news agencies and media organisations within the country, and was also the correspondent of The Times, London, for more than 20 years. Nayar served as High Commissioner to the UK in 1990, and was later nominated to the Rajya Sabha as well. He is remembered for his column ‘Between the Lines.’

Nayar is survived by his wife and two sons.

Tributes poured in from the highest rung of politicians, ranging from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Ram Nath Kovind, to members of the media fraternity, who recalled Nayyar’s dedication towards democracy and freedom of the press.
