SC holds Anil Ambani guilty of contempt; asks him to pay ₹ 453 crore to Ericsson India within four weeks or go to jail 


Reliance Group chairman Anil Ambani and two of the company’s directors were held guilty of contempt on Wednesday by the Supreme Court for “wilfully not paying ₹550 crore” to Swedish telecom equipment maker Ericsson, reported The Economic Times.

According to the report, Ericsson had filed three contempt pleas in the apex court for not clearing its dues.

According to NDTV, the SC said Ambani would go to jail for three months if he doesn’t pay ₹453 crores to Ericsson India within four weeks.

“The court tore into the Reliance Communications chairman for what it called a ‘cavalier attitude’ and fined him and two of his directors ₹1 crore each.”

“Anil Ambani and others breached their undertaking,” said the court, terming it as “willful disobedience.”

In a statement, a Reliance Communication Limited spokesperson said: “We respect the Supreme Court judgement. The RCOM Group shall comply with the same.”
