NaMo TV yet to comply with ‘election silence’ rule despite EC order

The Election Commission (EC) on Tuesday made it clear that NaMo TV, a channel dedicated to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, will have to comply with the 48-hour long ‘election silence’ before every Lok Sabha election phase. Despite the order by the EC, NaMo TV continues to run and display political content.

The Indian Express reported that a direction to comply with section 126 (i) (b) of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, was sent to the Bharatiya Janata Party. This Act prohibits the display of any “election matters by means of cinematographic, television or other similar apparatus” during the silent period.

The 48- hour silent period began for the second phase of the election on Tuesday evening. But it appears that NaMo TV is still running political content in the regions that will go to poll on April 18. Take for instance in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, NaMo TV is still on air on Dish TV and Tata Sky.

Ditto in Guwahati, Assam. You can still watch the channel on Airtel.
