What happened when JNU students marched on Rashtrapati Bhavan
On December 9, students from Delhi’s Jawaharlal Nehru University marched on the Rashtrapati Bhavan in protest against a steep hike in hostel fees. They were violently stopped in their tracks by the Delhi Police, who resorted to a lathi-charge to disperse the protesters.
Students at JNU have been protesting for over 40 days now – boycotting classes and even exams – demanding a complete rollback of the fee hike. They argue that nearly 40 per cent of the university’s students come from poor families and they would not be able to continue their studies if the fees are increased.
Veena Nair of Newslaundry was on the ground covering the march. She details what happened.
