Migration crisis, fake news, and hate speech: Tune into a webinar with South Asian journalists

Across the globe, journalists are on the frontlines of the coronavirus pandemic, putting themselves at risk to report from the ground. Given the work they do, and the different crises they face, the Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative has organised a webinar with prominent media voices from across South Asia to discuss difficult questions on the migration crisis, hate speech, misinformation, and health during the Covid-19 pandemic

The webinar will take place on Sunday, May 3, at 11 am. May 3 is also World Press Freedom Day.

The panellists for the discussion are Rajdeep Sardesai, consulting editor at the India Today Group; Kanak Dixit, founder and editor of Nepal-based Himal Southasian magazine; Mahfuz Anam, editor of Bangladesh's Daily Star; Beena Sarwar, senior journalist, filmmaker and media professor based in the US; Kumar Lopez of the Sri Lanka Press Institute; Patricia Mukhim, social activist, Padma Shri awardee, and editor of the Shillong Times; Manisha Pande, executive editor of Newslaundry; Amitabh Sinha, resident editor at the Indian Express; Sandeep Dikshit, editor at the Tribune; and Neerja Chowdhury, senior journalist and activist.

The discussion will be moderated by Sanjoy Hazarika, international director of the Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative and co-convenor at the South Asia Media Defenders Network.
