‘Why keep the sword hanging’: Bombay High Court pulls up Mumbai police on Republic TV TRP case

The Bombay High Court on Wednesday asked the Mumbai police how they had no evidence against Republic TV after three months of investigation in the TRP fixing case.

The bench of Justices SS Shinde and Manish Pitale also demanded to know why they had not named the channel as an accused yet, Live Law reported.

Justice Shinde said, "There are two chargesheets, and there seems to be no evidence against them. And also is there a statutory requirement that the investigation should be completed before the High Court takes cognisance.

“Why keep the sword hanging on their head?" he asked.

Appearing for Republic TV, senior advocate Ashok Mundargi claimed that there was nothing substantial against his client and that "the prosecution investigation is cooked up".

The prosecution on the other hand claimed that they did have evidence against them and that they were still in the process of collecting more.

Justice Pitale noted: "The documents that are shown to us and the submissions that are being made, we do not see the correlation with the worth of the scam. Is there any document which mentions the worth, how many crores of rupees was involved?"

Mundargi added, "We are still suspects. If there is material against us, then let that material be shown. After four months, they cannot say they will not show material and keep the sword hanging."
