NWMI organises sale of photo prints to raise funds for Afghanistan's women journalists

The Taliban takeover of Kabul has put the freedom of the press in Afghanistan in a precarious position, particularly that of its women journalists. The Committee to Protect Journalists had noted that within four days of the Taliban takeover, at least two women anchors were barred from broadcasting the news at the news channel Radio Television Afghanistan.

In order to raise funds for Afghanistan's women journalists, the Network of Women in Media, India, in partnership with the Media Safety and Solidarity Fund, is organising a print sale of photographs by the Associated Press.

The initiative, christened “Journalists for Afghanistan”, features a collection of photos by AP’s photojournalists, capturing daily life in Afghanistan over two decades.

The fundraiser's website notes that the proceeds from the sale "will go toward helping women journalists in Afghanistan; whether it be finding safe houses, evacuations, rebuilding small media start-ups, settling in new countries or finding ways to continue telling their stories in their own voices."

Recipients of the proceeds will be identified through organisations that the NWMI is in touch with, including the Centre for the Protection of Afghan Women Journalists, the Women Journalists’ Co-ordination Center, and the Afghan Independent Journalists Association.
