How Kashmir's English papers covered Yasin Malik's sentencing

Kashmiri separatist leader Yasin Malik was sentenced to life imprisonment by a special National investigation Agency court in Delhi on Wednesday. The Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front leader had earlier been convicted in an alleged terror funding case.

Here is how the leading English dailies in Kashmir covered Malik's sentencing.

The Srinagar edition of Rising Kashmir carried a PTI report on Malik’s sentence on page one.

“The National investigation agency Delhi court on Wednesday awarded life imprisonment to Yasin Malik, one of the foremost separatist leaders of Jammu and Kashmir,” it said.

The report continued on page 10, with further details of the court proceedings. Towards the end, the report mentioned that Malik's sentencing sparked protests in Srinagar and that some of the protesters clashed with the security forces.

The Kashmir Observer too carried the PTI report on its front page, with the . headline, “Yasin Malik jailed for life".

Additionally, it carried a short report on a statement by the People’s Alliance for Gupkar Declaration on Malik's sentencing. The PGDA is an alliance of regional pro-India political parties. There was also a PTI report on internet suspension. “Mobile internet was suspended in Kashmir as a precautionary measure after a court awarded life imprisonment to separatist leader Yasin Malik in a militant funding case, on Wednesday,” it stated.

Kashmir Reader went with the PTI report as well on the frontpage, as well as reports on internet suspension and clashes between the protesters and security forces in Srinagar. “Clashes erupted between supporters of JKLF chairman Yasin Malik and security forces in Maisuma locality,” the report stated.

The same PTI report featured on the frontpage of Kashmir Times also, along with a report on the clashes. On page seven, the newspaper carried short reports on former chief minister Mehbooba Mufti’s views on the case and the condemnation of Malik's sentencing by the All Party Hurriyat Conference and Pakistani politicians.

None of the newspapers mentioned carried editorials on the sentencing.
